Do Not Rebel Against the Lord

The purposes of this prayer are: Leadership, Inspiration/Encouragement and Guidance/Purpose.

Omnipotent Lord, as the Israelites approached the Promised Land, you instructed Moses to order a leader from each tribe to go and spy on the land of Canaan and report back what they had found. All but two of the spies came back with dishonest and distorted reports of vastly superior opposing forces. Many of the Israelites then became discouraged and fearful. The rebellious among them suggested that they appoint new leaders who would lead them back to captivity in Egypt, which would be a better fate for them than being slaughtered in the desert: “Then Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground before the whole community of Israel. Two of the men who had explored the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothing. They said to all the people of Israel, ‘The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey. Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!’” Numbers 14:5–9 (NLT). Lord, the history of the Israelites written in the Old Testament has many examples, as in this passage from the book of Numbers, of how quickly and easily people can lose their faith in your protection. Enduring faith in Jesus is not effortless. Father, we pray for continued and abundant faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
