The purposes of this prayer are: Guidance/Purpose and Patience/Persistence.

Compassionate Lord, Luke began the book of Acts with a reminder of what Jesus said to his disciples after he arose from the dead and before he ascended into heaven: “The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after he had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom he had chosen. To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Gathering them together, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which,’ he said, ‘you heard of from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’” Acts 1:1–5 (NASB). Gracious Lord, the first Christians each received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Every Christian thereafter received the indwelling Holy Spirit the moment each accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to die to our old, sinful selves and to live for Christ, and to become more like Christ. Thank you, Precious Lord, for the guidance we receive from the Holy Spirit. Amen.
