The purposes of this prayer are: Justice, Holiness/Righteousness and Leadership.

Righteous God, the prophet Micah prophesied of both the fall of the northern Israelite kingdom of Samaria that occurred in 721 B.C., and the fall of the southern Israelite kingdom of Judah in 586 B.C. He told the Israelites of the devastation to come, why it would happen, and how he would lament the carnage as it progressed from Samaria to Judah, saying, “All this will happen because of Jacob’s rebellion and the sins of the house of Israel. What is the rebellion of Jacob? Isn’t it Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Isn’t it Jerusalem?” and further, “Because of this, I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot and naked. I will howl like the jackals and mourn like ostriches. For her wound is incurable and has reached even Judah; it has approached my people’s city gate, as far as Jerusalem.” Micah 1:5, 8–9 (CSB). Because of Israel’s apostasy and idolatry, the Lord “will make Samaria a heap of ruins in the countryside, a planting area for a vineyard. I will roll her stones into the valley and expose her foundations. All her carved images will be smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire and I will destroy all her idols.” Micah 1:6–7 (CSB). Heavenly Father, for many years you delayed your response to your covenant people’s sins before taking decisive action against them. Their leaders did not heed the warnings from their prophets, however, and suffered tremendous punishment as a result. Father, thank you for the reconciliation and forgiveness of our sins that we receive from our faith in your Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
