121 Days of Prayer
There Are Twelve Hours of Daylight Every Day
The purposes of this prayer are: Healing, Opportunity, Patience/Persistence and Illumination.
Gracious God, John recorded the time when Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus of their brother Lazarus’ grave illness. Jesus, deciding to both perform a miracle and demonstrate that God moves according to his timing, not according to what people would wish his timing to be, waited two days before going to the sisters: “So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, he stayed where he was for the next two days. Finally, he said to his disciples, ‘Let’s go back to Judea.’ But his disciples objected. ‘Rabbi,’ they said, ‘only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?’ Jesus replied, ‘There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of the world. But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.’ Then he said, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.’” John 11:5–11 (NLT). Jesus indicated to his disciples that he must not waste the remaining hours of daylight available to him to accomplish his mission, in spite of the risk of being stoned in Judea. Lord, Mary and Martha desperately wanted Jesus to come and heal Lazarus before he died. They did not know that Jesus planned to do a resurrection miracle. You respond to prayers in your perfect timing, Lord. Help us to always remember that. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
