Pay Attention to What You Hear

The purposes of this prayer are: Wisdom and Guidance/Purpose.

Benevolent Father, the apostle Mark cautioned his readers to always strive to comprehend and evaluate any teaching they received about Jesus and to discern whether it agreed with the fundamentals of the Christian faith that they heard from the apostles, writing that Jesus said, “’Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’ And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’” Mark 4:21–25 (ESV). The greater our understanding of the basics of Christianity is, the better we will be able to understand the more advanced concepts of our faith (and still more will be added to us). If we do not grasp or accept even the most basic assertions of our faith, then even what we have will soon fall away or become unimportant to us. Gracious Lord, we pray that we always value and nurture the faith that you have given to us, and that we also grow in our faith as we learn more about Jesus. Amen.
