He Was Counted Among the Rebels

The purposes of this prayer are: Guidance/Purpose, Perseverance and Fortitude.

Omniscient Lord, after the last supper that Jesus shared with his disciples, they still did not have a good understanding of what was about to occur. To help them better understand, he reminded them of when he sent them out in pairs to travel throughout the country to share with their fellow Israelites that the kingdom of God had come near. He had instructed them to take no extra clothes or food or money with them, nor any swords. But Jesus knew that the crowds would soon turn against him, and the situation would become dangerous for them: “Then Jesus asked them, ‘When I sent you out to preach the good news and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?’ ‘No,’ they replied. ‘But now,’ he said, ‘take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one! For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.’ ‘Look, Lord,’ they replied, ‘We have two swords among us.’ ‘That’s enough,’ he said.” Luke 22:35–38 (NLT). Gracious Lord, it is true still today that followers of Jesus in some areas of the world must be continuously aware of the threats they may face simply for being Christians. We pray that you give persecuted Christians the courage and the perseverance they need to maintain their faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Amen.
