He Did This to Indicate the Kind of Death by Which He Would Glorify God

The purposes of this prayer are: End Times/The Second Coming of Jesus, Obedience, Salvation and Forgiveness.

Sovereign Lord, the apostle John recorded a post-resurrection appearance of Jesus when he met with some of his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:1). One of Jesus’ purposes was to restore Peter’s devotion to him after Peter had denied Jesus three times while Jesus was being questioned by the high priest Caiaphas. Jesus did this by asking Peter three times if Peter loved him. When Peter told him each time that he did love Jesus, Jesus told him to tend his sheep. Then Jesus said to him, “’Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God). After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?’ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” John 21:18–22 (NRSV). Gracious Lord, your command to Peter to follow you is still as powerful to your disciples today as it was to Peter all those years ago. We pray that we may be as devoted to you, Jesus, as Peter was after you restored his faith. Amen.
